Hidden away on the easternmost edge of Malaga province, Playa del Cañuelo is widely considered one of the most beautiful beaches on the Costa del Sol. Located in Nerja, right on the border between Malaga and Granada provinces, this secluded cove offers visitors a pristine natural environment away from the commercialized tourist spots that dominate much of the coastline.
Location and Landscape
Playa del Cañuelo is situated within the protected natural area of Acantilados de Maro-Cerro Gordo, characterized by its dramatic cliffs that plunge into the crystal-clear Mediterranean waters. As the last beach in Malaga province before entering Granada, this 400-meter-long cove offers a truly unspoiled coastal experience.
The beach itself features a mix of sand and pebbles, with some sections being quite gravelly. While this might not appeal to those looking for pure sandy beaches, it contributes to the exceptional water clarity that makes this spot famous. The surrounding cliffs not only create a sense of isolation and tranquility but also provide a stunning backdrop for photographs.
What Makes It Special
What truly sets Playa del Cañuelo apart is its pristine environment. As part of a protected nature reserve, the beach has remained largely undeveloped, free from the high-rise hotels and excessive commercialization often found elsewhere on the Costa del Sol.
The beach's main attraction is undoubtedly its crystal-clear waters, which are perfect for snorkeling and diving. The seabed is rich in marine life, even including orange coral, a vulnerable species. These transparent waters allow visitors to explore the underwater world with exceptional visibility, making it one of the best spots for snorkeling in the entire region.
Adding to its charm is the relative seclusion. While the beach can get busy during high season (particularly in August), it remains less crowded than many of the more accessible beaches along the coast. This creates a more relaxed atmosphere, perfect for those looking to escape the typical tourist hustle.
Facilities and Dining
Despite its remote location, Playa del Cañuelo offers some basic amenities, including public toilets, showers, and lifeguard service during the summer months. Visitors can rent sun loungers and umbrellas, providing comfort for a day at the beach.
The beach is home to two well-regarded restaurants:
- Chiringuito Las Piedras - A popular beach restaurant serving traditional Andalusian seafood dishes. Known for its fresh fish, generous portions, and terrace just steps from the sea. Reservations are highly recommended during peak season, especially for lunch.
- El Paraíso del Cañuelo - A more rustic option that also specializes in seafood and paella. It offers a more casual dining experience with good views of the beach.
Both restaurants are only open during the tourist season, typically closing in the late autumn and reopening in spring.
Tip: If you plan to dine at either restaurant during high season (July-August), it's essential to book ahead. Chiringuito Las Piedras can be contacted at +34 649 854 531 for reservations.
How to Get There
The unique location of Playa del Cañuelo means getting there requires a bit more effort than visiting the more accessible beaches in Nerja, but that effort is rewarded with a more pristine experience.
By Car:
- From Nerja: Take the N-340 (Carretera de Almería) east toward Almería. Continue past Maro for about 5 minutes until you see the kilometer marker 302 and a biker bar on your left. Just after this, you'll reach a roundabout - take the first exit to the parking area.
- From Malaga: Follow the A-7 motorway east and take exit 295 for Nerja. At the roundabout, take the N-340 towards Almería to Maro. At the Nerja Caves roundabout, take the second exit and continue past Maro. Follow the N-340 for about 5 minutes until after marker 302.
- From Granada: Drive south on the A-44 and take exit 183 to merge onto the E-15/A-7 towards Salobreña/Málaga. Take exit 305 towards N-340/La Herradura, continue to the roundabout and take the N-340 towards Maro. After passing through a tunnel and driving for about 3 minutes, you'll pass Playa Cantarriján and see the 'La Herradura' village sign. After marker 303, continue until you reach a large roundabout, take the third exit to the parking area.
The beach is approximately 13 kilometers east of Nerja town center.

Parking and Access
There is a large parking area at the top of the cliff, just off the N-340. During summer months, this lot fills up quickly, so arriving early (before 11 AM) is recommended. If the parking lot is full, additional parking is available along the main road, though this means a longer walk.
From the parking area, visitors have two options to reach the beach:
- Shuttle Service: During high season (June to September), a shuttle bus service operates between the parking area and the beach. The shuttle costs approximately €2 round-trip per person and runs continuously from morning until around 8:00 PM. During peak times, queues for this service can build up, so factor in some waiting time.
- Walking: For the more adventurous, it's possible to walk down to the beach via a steep path. The descent takes approximately 30 minutes and offers beautiful views, but be prepared for a challenging uphill return journey, especially in hot weather. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended.
Important Note: During most of the year, there is an asphalt road that leads all the way down to the beach, and it's possible to drive down. However, during summer months, driving down is prohibited, and the shuttle service is the only motorized transport option.
Public Transport Options
Unfortunately, there is no direct public transport service to Playa del Cañuelo. If you're relying on public transportation, you'll need to:
- Take a bus to Nerja
- From Nerja, either take a taxi to the Cañuelo parking area or consider joining an organized excursion that includes transportation
Several local tour operators in Nerja offer kayaking excursions that pass by Playa del Cañuelo and the surrounding cliffs, which can be an alternative way to experience this beautiful coastline.
Best Time to Visit
Playa del Cañuelo can be visited year-round, but the experience varies considerably with the seasons:
- Summer (June-September): Warmest sea temperatures and full facilities, but also the busiest period. The shuttle service operates during these months, making access easier. Water temperature is perfect for swimming and snorkeling.
- Spring/Autumn (April-May, October-November): Pleasant temperatures, fewer crowds, and often still warm enough for swimming. The restaurants may have limited hours or be closed in late autumn. The shuttle service may not operate outside peak season.
- Winter (December-March): Very quiet with few visitors, but the natural beauty remains. Restaurants are typically closed, and facilities are limited. Swimming might be too cold for most, but the beach is perfect for peaceful walks.
Activities
Beyond relaxing on the beach, Playa del Cañuelo offers several activities for visitors:
- Snorkeling and Diving: The crystal-clear waters and abundant marine life make this an excellent spot for snorkeling. Bring your own equipment as rental options are limited.
- Hiking: A popular trail connects Playa del Cañuelo to the neighboring Playa de Cantarriján. This scenic coastal path offers stunning views and takes approximately 3 hours round trip.
- Photography: The dramatic cliffs, clear waters, and natural setting provide endless opportunities for photography enthusiasts.
- Birdwatching: The cliffs and surrounding area are home to various bird species, making it an interesting spot for birdwatchers.
